A redesign can improve your website enormously, but it can also quietly destroy your search traffic if it is handled carelessly. The risk comes from changing addresses, removing pages and losing the signals Google has built up. Here is how to avoid it.
1. Audit what you have
List all the current pages and note which ones bring traffic, enquiries and links. Google Search Console shows which pages get impressions and clicks. These pages need the most protection.
2. Keep what works
Keep the good content, the good addresses and the headings that rank. Redesign the look, speed and layout without needlessly rewriting what already performs.
3. Map old URLs to new URLs
Create a spreadsheet with every old address and the page that replaces it. If an address changes, it needs a 301 redirect, which tells Google and visitors that the page has permanently moved.
4. Build and test on staging
Build the new site where search engines cannot see it. Check titles, descriptions, headings, internal links, images and speed. Test the redirects before launch.
5. Launch carefully
Switch the site live, turn off any setting that blocks search engines, submit the new sitemap in Search Console and test the old addresses to confirm they redirect.
6. Monitor for the first month
Watch Search Console for crawl errors and drops in clicks. Fix broken links and missing redirects quickly. Small dips are normal while Google reprocesses the site, but large ones need attention.
