Where we can help

"National grid collapse" was one of the top searches in Nigeria on 20 October 2026, after generation fell sharply the day before. Pulse reported that supply dropped from about 3,840 megawatts in the morning to roughly 477 megawatts by 1 p.m., while Vanguard put the low point at 675 megawatts. The system operator, NISO, said it was not a full national collapse. Either way, many businesses lost power for hours.

If you sell, book or take enquiries online, the real question is simple: does a blackout take my website down, and what can I do about it? The honest answer is "it depends where your website lives". This guide explains what happens and what to do.

Does a power cut take your website offline?

It depends on where the website is hosted:

  • Your website is on cloud hosting. The servers are in professional data centres with backup power, often in other countries. A blackout in Lagos or Abuja does not switch them off. Your site stays online.
  • Your website runs on a computer or server in your own office. If the power goes, your website goes. This is rare for new sites, but it still happens with old setups.
  • Your website is hosted on a cheap local plan with no backup power. Some small hosts have limited backup, so power problems can mean downtime.

The most important step is to know which one you have. Ask your developer or hosting company where the servers are, and what happens during a power failure. Good managed WordPress hosting runs in data centres designed to keep working through power problems.

What a blackout does to your business even when the site stays online

Your website may be up while your business is not. Power cuts affect:

  • You. You cannot update the site, see orders or reply to customers if your laptop battery, router and phone data run out.
  • Your customers. Home and office broadband can drop out, and mobile networks can slow down when towers run on backup power.
  • Your team. Staff who manage the website, take orders or fulfil deliveries may be offline.

So the goal is a website that keeps working while people have patchy power and data, and a business that can still receive orders when you are offline.

7 practical ways to stay online during power cuts

  1. Use reliable cloud hosting. Choose hosting in a proper data centre, with uptime monitoring and daily backups, not a server in your office.
  2. Keep pages light. Visitors on weak mobile data or a phone saving battery will leave a heavy site. Compress images, avoid autoplay video and remove unused plugins. Read our guide on speeding up a slow WordPress website.
  3. Design mobile-first. Most people browse on phones, and phones keep working when the router does not. See why Nigerian websites must be mobile-first.
  4. Put WhatsApp and phone buttons on every page. If email or a form is not convenient, customers can message you in one tap, and you can reply from your phone even when your computer is off.
  5. Set up uptime alerts. Free uptime monitors email or message you when your site is down, so you find out before your customers do.
  6. Take automatic offsite backups. If a power surge or outage damages a server, you can restore your site from a recent copy. Our WordPress maintenance checklist shows what to check each week.
  7. Plan your own backup power. A small inverter or power bank for your router and phone, and a laptop with good battery life, keeps you able to answer orders while the grid is down.

If you run an online store

A blackout can cost you sales in two ways: customers cannot place orders, and you cannot ship them. To protect your store:

  • Make sure checkout works on mobile and loads quickly, with payment through Paystack, Flutterwave or another gateway.
  • Send order confirmations by email and WhatsApp, so buyers do not worry when things are slow.
  • Tell customers clearly when delivery may be delayed by power or network problems.
  • Keep stock levels up to date, so you never sell something that you cannot fulfil.

A simple checklist to use this week

  • Ask your host where your servers are and what backup power and backups they provide.
  • Test your website on a phone using mobile data, not Wi-Fi.
  • Add a WhatsApp button if you do not have one.
  • Set up a free uptime monitor.
  • Make sure you have a recent offsite backup.
  • Charge a power bank and keep your key logins somewhere you can reach from a phone.
