For many Nigerians, a phone is the main way to reach the internet. If your website is only comfortable on a desktop, you are making things hard for most of your potential customers. Mobile-first design means planning for the phone screen first and then adding space and detail for larger screens.
Why mobile-first matters
Phone screens are small and attention is short. Mobile-first forces you to decide what matters most on each page. Google also mainly uses the mobile version of your pages for indexing and ranking, so a weak mobile experience can limit your visibility.
Design for thumbs and small screens
Use large, clear buttons with enough space between them. Keep forms short. Make the phone number and WhatsApp button easy to tap. Keep text at a readable size and avoid tiny menus that need precision.
Design for slow and expensive data
Many visitors use mobile data and pay for it. Compress images, avoid autoplaying video and remove heavy scripts you do not need. Fast pages are kinder to your visitors and better for search. See our WordPress speed guide.
Make contact effortless
Click-to-call and click-to-WhatsApp links remove friction. A visitor who wants to ask a question should be able to do it in one tap.
Test on real phones
Do not rely only on a desktop browser pretending to be a phone. Test on real devices, on real networks, and ask someone unfamiliar with your site to complete a task.
