Before you hire a designer or start building, you need to choose a platform. The three common routes are a self-hosted WordPress website, a drag-and-drop website builder such as Wix, and a fully custom-coded website. Each has a place. Here is how they compare for a business in Nigeria.
WordPress
WordPress is open-source software that powers a very large share of websites on the internet. You own the website and can host it anywhere. Thousands of themes and plugins let you add almost any feature, from a simple brochure site to a WooCommerce online store. It is strong for SEO, and there is a large pool of developers, so you are never stuck with one supplier.
The trade-off is responsibility: someone needs to keep it updated, secure and backed up. That is why many owners choose managed hosting and a maintenance plan.
Website builders such as Wix
Builders bundle hosting, templates and an editor in one monthly subscription. They are quick to start and suit very small sites or short-term projects. The limits appear as you grow: you cannot move the site elsewhere, customisation is restricted to what the platform allows and you pay as long as the site exists. Payment options and local requirements can also be harder to meet.
Custom-coded websites
A custom-built site offers complete control and can suit complex web applications. It also costs more to build, takes longer, and every change needs a developer. For most small and medium businesses, that is more than they need.
How to choose
Choose WordPress if you want ownership, strong SEO, the ability to grow and a large talent pool. Choose a builder if you need a very simple page fast and accept the limits. Choose custom code if you are building a product with unusual requirements. For most Nigerian businesses, WordPress offers the best balance of cost, control and growth.
